Essential DIY Parts List

Here is what you will need. All available at Bunnings.

  • 20mm BSP male thread to 13mm barbed
  • 11mm-16mm hose clamp
  • Length of 13mm hose to suit your application. Make sure it’s drinking water suitable. I just cut a bit off my caravan hose.
  • 13mm hose connector with control valve
Modified water jerry can with control valve and hose fitting on a rock.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Firstly remove the bung or standard tap from the jerry can.
  2. Then screw in the 20mm BSP male to 13 mm barbed. You can put some thread tape on, but I haven’t and it’s been ok. Do it up tight but not too tight as the thread is only plastic and may strip.
  3. Next push the hose over the barbed and secure it with the hose clamp.
  4. Now cut the hose to your required length.
  5. And finally, put on the hose connector with a control valve.
  6. It’s also a good idea to fill it up and give it a good check for leaks before putting it into the car.

Usage and Benefits

This works really well for when your jerry can is stored where it’s not easy to get to as you only need to get to the end of the hose with the tap on it to use. You can fill it up too by plugging it into a tap or another hose using a 2-way hose coupling.

This hack has made our life easier on the road. No more heavy lifting water cans and ease of access to get fresh water with the turn of a tap. It’s made trips to the beach or in the mud a lot easier to clean with just a quick and simple hose down of dirty feet.

Highlights

  • Budget-friendly: Low cost project
