With the rise of advanced RV power systems adding kilos to our camp – compact RV designer JB Caravans claps back with the JB Gator X ev single-axle gas-free van.
Seen here at Tough Tested 2025, it features a light but powerful EcoFlow power system in a format weighing less than 2.5T tare for easy towing.

Overview
The JB Gator X ev is a compact off-road tourer designed for adventurous couples who demand massive off-grid power without the heavy weight penalty.
Sporting a generous 800W array atop, and 10kW (832Ah) of lithium power available for play, the JB Gator X measures just nose-to-hitch 7.6m.
It’s fully off-road, too, with a smart up-tick tail, Cruisemaster airbag suspension and tough Rhino-coating on the chassis and lower skirt.
Seen here, within a 17ft 10in layout, it calves a private yet open space for relaxation with the L-shape dinette orientated towards the master bedroom.

Layout, Comfort & Liveability – Will it fit my lifestyle?
The JB Gator X ev tested here offers a spacious couples’ layout featuring premium electric appliances and a timber-free construction for durable touring.
Interior layout
This rear-door layout includes a front island bed, a central kitchen opposite an L-shaped lounge and a full-width rear ensuite with separate shower.
On entry, opposite that generous L-shape lounge, you’ll find the campsite-facing galley kitchen. Pleasant, functional and easy to clean, it features a large sunken sink and two-hob Dometic induction cooktop set with heat-proof countertops.
Underneath, a convection microwave delivers roasts on the road set around efficient narrow profile cabinetry throughout adjacent the ventless 224L compressor fridge.
To the right, campers enjoy easy access to the full rear-width bathroom from indoors and out, which includes a front loader washing machine, open shelving and a large shower with on a rail.

Comfort & practicality
Up front, the north-south innerspring queen size bed rides on a timber slated base and flanked in robes. Wall mounted Sirocco fans face towards the bed. In this full off-grid-power caravan, all the 240V power points are wired to the inverter.

Build, Features & Self-Sufficiency – Can it handle my adventures?
To Tough Tested 2025, in the Gator Xev, JB delivers a lightweight, timber-free off-road van with airbag suspension.
🏕️ 💨 Sand & Corrugations Test
Objective
The Sand Moguls rigorously assesses suspension travel, body flex and stability at speed.
Observations
Towing the JB Gator X EV with a Ram, JB driver Colton hits the soft sand moguls with decisive momentum. The rig attacks the undulating track, where the Cruisemaster ATX suspension works overtime to absorb the deep ruts.
Despite the violent surface changes, Colton maintains a steady throttle, allowing the van to float over the whoops rather than digging in, demonstrating excellent weight distribution and tracking stability through the loose terrain.
Sand & Corrugations, What We Found
---
Component Damage: Zero structural damage or loose fittings were observed on the chassis or bodywork.
Caravan Reaction: The van remained composed, tracking straight behind the vehicle without crabbing or swaying.
Component Response: Suspension cycled fully, keeping tyres planted while the coupling articulated freely.

🌊 💦 Water Crossing Test
Objective
The water crossing evaluates water resistance, clearance, and the operational integrity of electric brakes.
Observations
Towing the JB Gator X EV with a Ram, Colton driving for JB tackles a murky, axle-deep bog hole with steady momentum. Entering the water at a consistent pace he generates a protective bow wave, the rig pushes through the submerged track.
Colton maintains traction without hesitation, relying on the caravan’s clearance to navigate the hidden depths while keeping the momentum to exit the slippery far bank.
Water Crossing Test, What We Found
---
Component Damage: No visible damage to the caravan body or lower skirt was observed.
Caravan Reaction: The Gator X EV remained planted, tracking true behind the Ranger without floating.
Component Response: Raptor coating deflected debris, and the high clearance kept the body dry.

🪨 Moguls & Ruts Test
Objective
The Vantec Caravan Graveyard assesses departure angles, suspension behaviour, articulation, momentum, and track adherence.
Observations
Entering the uneven terrain, Colton shepherds the Ram-JB Gator X EV combo through deep, alternating washouts. A slow, technical approach, allowing the suspension to fully articulate over the moguls.
This controlled speed prevents the van from bouncing uncontrollably, letting the Cruisemaster ATX suspension absorb the severe undulations while the coupling rotates to keep the caravan wheels grounded on the shifting surface.
Water Crossing Test, What We Found
---
Component Damage: Zero impact damage recorded on the chassis, drawbar or rear bumper.
Caravan Reaction: The van remained stable, following the tow vehicle’s line without excessive sway.
Component Response: Suspension articulated freely, maintaining tyre contact and traction throughout the ruts.
Chassis, suspension & build
With the Gator X ev weighing in at under 2.5T tare, JB brings the magic sauce with four-level Cruisemaster ATX airbag suspension with M60 dampers plus anti-sway from AL-KO. A chamfered tail ensures the stacked Raptor-coated chassis clears obstacles on the trails.
The exterior blends a lightweight Stucco finished with Duratec coating concealing tough XPS insulation. JB uses a tough timber-free material for the frame made from recycled bottles. A honeycomb floors provides a strong lightweight base. Alucomp walls are available as an option.
Power & water
The JB Gator X ev runs the 10kW EcoFlow Battery Management System off-the-grid – equating to 832Ah. Notably, the system is scalable to 15kW and provides:
- EcoFlow’s 1600W-rated solar charging capabilities
- 3kW AC charging
- 1000W for DC-DC charging
- 3600W inverter, with 6000W surge
The fully self-replenishing setup is gas free shielding the interior against ingress caused by gas vents – working in tandem with the Dometic Dust Reduction System.
