Toyota unveiled its much-anticipated new HiLux, set to launch in Australia in December 2025. Aussie designers at Altona spearheaded the bold new “Cyber Sumo” styling collaborating with teams in Thailand and Japan. This new look is matched with a completely overhauled interior for improved comfort and technology.

The 2026 Toyota Hilux lineup comprises five grades including the WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue and the new Rugged X. Here are the 10 key details towers need to know about 2026 Toyota HiLux towing.

The Toyota 2026 Hilux goes on sale December 9, priced from $33,990

What Will the 2026 HiLux Pull?

1. Standard 500Nm 2.8L Diesel Engine

All grades of the new HiLux, both in 4X2 and 4X4 configurations, are powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. It produces maximum outputs of 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Six-speed manual transmission variants will offer up to 420Nm of torque.

2. V-Active Tech Adds 65Nm Boost on Take-off

Fitted to SR5 and Rogue last year, Toyota’s 48-volt V-Active technology will now also be standard on automatic double cab SR grades and above.

Drivers will gain smoother stop-start functionality and an additional 8.5kW/65Nm of thrust when starting off.

3. WorkMate & SR suspension tuned for towing & loads

The MY26 HiLux gets a new two-tiered suspension tune with springs and dampers designed for either heavy-duty work or more comfort and adventure-oriented private use. Notably, the WorkMate and SR grades spring and shock absorber combos will be geared toward heavy load carrying and towing.

4. No towing weights unveiled

Toyota will release towing specifications and pricing closer to the models’ arrival dates, slated for December 2025.

What Will the New HiLux Cope With?

5. New Rugged X variant for off-roading

Toyota will offer the new HiLux with a choice of 21 different diesel variants and WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue and new Rugged X grades.

The reintroduced off-road Rugged X variant will feature trackside protection and off-road recovery capabilities that are yet to be announced.

6. New Traction Aids for Tricky Sites

Automatic SR 4×4 models (and all grades above) will now come standard with both a rear locking differential and the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) traction control system.

7. Cameras galore: the SR5 grades get a Multi-Terrain Monitor

Automatic double cab pickup SR5 grades and up will feature the new Multi-Terrain Monitor. Multiple camera views will shed light on the vehicle’s surroundings, including at the wheels for navigating difficult obstacles.

In-Cab Comforts & Future HiLux Models

8. Three-tiered dash improves forward visibility

Up front, the fully redesigned three-tiered dash sits flatter compared with the current HiLux to provide improved forward visibility. The new dash forms part of an overall restyled interior, which also includes a new digital instrument cluster and a new 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen that is standard on every variant.

Importantly, the climate control panel below it retains large physical buttons and knobs for ease of use.

9. New Electric Power Steering (and why it’s better)

The new HiLux adopts electric power steering (EPS), providing a significant change from the previous hydraulic system. A key benefit? Computer-tuned operation that kicks in at parking-lot speeds, perfect for reversing into camp.

10. Diesel & BEV models offered, hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) variant scheduled for 2028

Along with the trusted capability of diesel power, the new HiLux will also come in a battery-electric powertrain (BEV). Toyota also confirmed a hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) variant scheduled for 2028.
