The Old Ghan Museum

Northern Territory, Tourism

Address: 1 Norris Bell Ave, Alice Springs, NT, Australia

The Road Transport Historical Society is a volunteer based project dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Australia’s unique road transport heritage. It does this through its magnificant Shell Rimula Hall of Fame in Alice Springs, the traditional birthplace of the roadtrain.

The charter is not only to remember the great trucks, buses and vehicles of the past, but recognise the contribution of the men and women who drove and lived with these great machines of the past.

For every visitor there is a history lesson on how Australia’s tough terrain broke the best vehicles the world could throw at it; of how war at Australia’s doorstep brought mechanisation and development to this nation – and Central Australia in particular; and how a unique breed of road transport pioneer used improvisation, innovation, ingenuity, commonsense and sheer will to carve a road transport network from stark wilderness and to give us an industry that has been the nucleus and backbone of Australia’s development.

National Road Transport Hall of Fame, the Old Ghan Train Railway Museum and the magnificent Kenworth Dealer Truck Museum collectively make up the most comprehensive land transport museum in the southern hemisphere.
