What’s Up Downunder Blue Mountains to Byron Bay Podcast

Travelling as far as we do on what sometimes seems to be long trips – although in theory never over three weeks – there are so many memories made. One of our Producer Directors, Chris Hazlett, has become a bit of a podcast expert. On the last night of each of his trips he calls together cast, crew and guests to have a chat about what they’ve experienced on the trip. This podcast is the result of a recent trip from the Blue Mountains to Byron Bay.

Whyalla, a coastal town full of history, nature and rock ‘n’ roll

Well our first day of the Dometic Follow The Sun Convoy For Charity was full of fun, sun and a little rock’n’roll, Whyalla really does have it all. We are staying in the Discovery Parks Whyalla Foreshore, a holiday park that is more than just a holiday park. Kara and Kevin who run the park hold weekly BBQs for charity and pancake breakfasts, they have made this place a home away from home and a great place to bring the kids.

The morning started off with a relaxing breakfast with the cast, crew and caravaners. Within minutes everyone was discussing their first nights within their caravans, with every caravaner claiming they had the best of the best.

After breakfast our wonderful hosts, Macca and Robby, along with some of the caravaners, made a trip to the Whyalla Maritime Museum to tour The HMAS Whyalla, an Australian Minesweeper used during World War 2.  As we walked through the ship the stories began to tell themselves, the history within the ship and the journey from being built to being docked in Whyalla is incredible. This is a MUST while in Whyalla, the ship also has some fantastic photo opportunities.

While Robby and Macca were busy blasting the horn on the HMAS, Angie was with some of the other caravaners reliving the days of Elvis Presley. Thats right, Whyalla has its very own Elvis Presley Museum. Peter Bleeze has created a museum within his house full of Elvis Presley memorabilia. From the Elvis clocks and salt and pepper shakers to the 1961 gold Cadillac, its hard not to be impressed with Peter’s true dedication to the King.

Lunch was spent at the beach, where the water was unbelievably crystal blue. We said hi to some pelicans and dolphins, who came close enough to the pier that we could almost touch them.

After lunch I was lucky enough to get a tour of one of the 8 Best of the Best caravans on our convoy, The Sunland Patriot SELX 21’6″ rear door model.  The Patriot is packed with features and style. Power is provided by four 180 watt solar panels. This model  has an extra large shower, well thought out kitchen, full size queen bed and all your audio visual needs are met with the Auto Satellite System.

We finished the day off with a bang at our first Happy Hour. The town came out to enjoy a BBQ, tour the caravans, eat some fairly floss and helped us raise money and awareness for The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our final day in Whyalla was nothing short of amazing, and it was Remembrance Day. Whyalla put on a spectacular Remembrance Day Service that wonderfully paid homage to the courage and sacrifice to all the Australian servicemen and women during times of war.

Before setting off, some of the cast and crew decided to go kayaking with the local dolphins. If anyone in this town knows how to put on a show its these adorable creatures.

Well we are all packed up and ready for our next destination, Port Lincoln.
